PHRAN And PHRED: Analysis And Production Using A Common Knowledge Base

We p ropose a model o f l a n g u a g e use t h a t i s d e r i v e d from w l e w l ~ l a n g u a g e p r o c e s s i n g sys tems as knowledge -based s y s t ems . The knowledge t h a t needs t o be r e p r e s e n t e d and o r g a n i z e d h e r e i s t he l a r g e amount o f knowledge about what t h e u t t e r a n ce s of a language mean. In this paper, I describe some of the theoretleel underpinni~e of the model, and then desorlbe two programs , PHRAN and I~RED, t h a t a r e based on t h e s e i d e a s ° We have conduc ted a number o f e x p e r i m e n t s w i t h t h e s e sys tems t h a t have some b e a r i n g on t h e u t i l i t y o f t h e model "s p resumpt i o n s , i n c l u d i n g t e s t i n g t h e s e sys tems on o t h e r l a n g u a g e s (Spa h i s h and C h i n e s e ) , and i m p l e m e n t i n g one o f them i n a r e l a t i o n a l d a t a base s y s t e m .
